Transportation Management, Blue Yonder Network

Linfox doubles the size of its business through digital freight transformation with Blue Yonder

L'azienda

Linfox Australia (Linfox) is the Asia Pacific’s largest privately owned transport and logistics company. It was founded in 1956 by Lindsay Fox AC, who started with a single truck in Melbourne, delivering soft drinks during the summer and fuel in the winter. 70 years later, the company employs more than 8,500 people across 11 countries. Linfox operates across the Asia Pacific and continues to grow its business and capabilities, investing in technology, improved operations, safety, security, sustainability, and the development of its people.

La sfida aziendale

Linfox operates in a complex, volatile, multi-leg, multi-modal logistics market. For example, freight moving from Cairns to Perth can pass through seven handover points across rail, long-haul road, and local distribution. Linfox previously relied on bespoke, customer‑specific integrations and fragmented supply chain execution systems to cater to the diverse needs of a range of industries. This presented various challenges, so Linfox sought one system to overcome limitations and ensure it could continue meeting rising customer expectations for speed and reliability.

La soluzione

Linfox chose Blue Yonder Transportation Management (TMS) to provide a scalable, network-first transportation management foundation. Blue Yonder TMS helps Linfox standardize execution across customers, carriers, suppliers, and transport modes, enabling the company to manage complex, multi-leg freight movements through one shared digital environment.
Blue Yonder TMS also underpins Linfox’s Digital Freight Network (DFN), providing a scalable foundation to help Linfox meet rising customer expectations for speed, reliability, and visibility across its broad portfolio in Australia, New Zealand, and the wider Asia Pacific region.

“The Blue Yonder TMS solution has been integral to Linfox. It’s really enabled us to be a digitally enabled logistics partner, and it’s given our customers the visibility they need. We’ve had huge ambitions to grow our business, and ultimately Blue Yonder has enabled us to double the size of our business over the last seven years since we started using their TMS.”

Building a digital freight network

Linfox manages a logistics network of more than 3,000 trucks across Australia and New Zealand, and collaborates with customers, carriers, subcontractors, and suppliers. The company’s operations in Australia and New Zealand present distinct levels of complexity. In Australia, distances can be extremely long, with east-west linehaul journeys running from 24 to 72 hours. In both countries, variable route and mode planning is essential, whether due to Australia’s vast geography or New Zealand’s challenging terrain and inter-island movements.

Constraints, including labor availability, weather impacts, and recurring force majeure events, can create challenging operating environments. On any given day, Linfox’s teams across Australia are operating tens of thousands of shipments and shipment legs. Teams are constantly adapting, with ongoing replanning and same-day adjustments. Maintaining real-time visibility and communication during these conditions is critical for Linfox’s customers.

Traditional point‑to‑point TMS models and bespoke integrations had some limitations across the network. At the same time, the industry demanded greater speed, resilience, and execution sophistication as shippers faced rising customer expectations and increasingly shorter delivery windows.

To redefine how large‑scale logistics networks are digitally integrated, governed, and executed, the company set out to establish a network‑first, repeatable, and industrialized execution model capable of operating at a national scale and supporting complex logistics as a core capability.

Linfox decided to build its DFN, the company’s internal digital operating environment for managing freight and orders end-to-end, from order creation and acceptance through to invoicing and financial settlement. The creation of this network, supported by Blue Yonder TMS powered by Microsoft Azure, has established a shared digital foundation that strengthens collaboration across Linfox's logistics ecosystem, standardizes execution, and supports scalable operational growth.

Advanced execution capability to support fuel complexity

Blue Yonder TMS includes advanced execution logic for Linfox’s bulk fuel and liquids logistics across Australia, including compartment based order allocation, vehicle axle and weight-balancing constraints, multi drop routing, and regulatory compliance considerations. Together, these capabilities help Linfox coordinate complex liquid-bulk movements from planning through delivery with greater consistency, control, and visibility, while also helping manage rising volume, operational complexity, and compliance requirements beyond what typical TMS solutions can support.

Blue Yonder delivery teams work closely with Linfox’s IT and transportation operations teams within Linfox’s centrally managed governance model, aligning configuration, integration, and operational requirements as Linfox scales its Blue Yonder TMS-enabled liquid-bulk transportation operating model across the network.

Rapid onboarding of customers and supply chain partners

Linfox has seen improved execution reliability and visibility without requiring heavy integration effort with its partners. With Blue Yonder TMS, Linfox partners do not need deep system-to-system integration. Instead, its built-in API framework connects Linfox’s partner systems to Linfox for the secure exchange of orders, status updates, and delivery information. Building on this, Linfox’s portal enables rapid onboarding for customers and suppliers, giving them quick access to the same advanced transportation management capabilities within Blue Yonder TMS, regardless of their IT systems or digital environment.

With this modern API-based approach, Linfox’s largest customers or carriers can be onboarded within just a few weeks.

“Customers and supply chain partners are rapidly onboarded. Recently, we introduced 12 new mining customers in Queensland with 2,300 vendors and suppliers within just 38 business days, which accelerates the time to value,” says Delija.

Blue Yonder TMS also strengthens the digital experience that Linfox’s partners and customers rely on every day through its self-service portals. These portals put data at the fingertips of users across the business and provide a modern, app-style track-and-trace experience with live ETAs and mapping, where customers can see breadcrumb-style GPS location updates as freight moves through the network.

Network-wide planning, execution, and visibility

Linfox has successfully moved towards more flexible automation tools that make daily execution easier for team members. The company has simplified its operations by retiring multiple bespoke systems and adopting a repeatable Blue Yonder TMS-based model that can scale across customers, carriers, and business units. Linfox operates a stable, high-volume execution system that provides network orchestration across order management, route optimization, capacity planning, and execution. Today, Blue Yonder TMS manages 1.43 million shipments and 3.7 million tonnes of freight annually, moving over 260 million kilometers through 14,100 locations. The TMS user base now stands at 1,400, including 240 added in the most recent year.

“Linfox has demonstrated how Blue Yonder’s reliable, network-first TMS goes beyond a typical TMS deployment. Blue Yonder sits at the heart of our DFN as the trusted execution layer that powers our internal network. If something is not in Blue Yonder, we cannot report, optimize, analyze, or settle financially without the data foundation it provides,” said Delija.

The DFN, supported by Blue Yonder TMS, serves as a single source of truth for Linfox’s customers. Through refined inbound APIs and event-based integrations, customers and carriers can subscribe to transport events, including pickup, transit delays, and delivery confirmation. This improves confidence in shipment visibility and supports scale across the company’s digital environment.

“Linfox chose to adopt Blue Yonder TMS and has established a repeatable model capable of high‑volume orchestration, rapid onboarding, and advanced execution of fuel and liquid logistics. This transformation turned digital freight from an aspiration into a core capability, setting new benchmarks for reliability, scalability, and speed to value across our operations,” says Delija.

The future

Linfox has renewed its agreements with Blue Yonder, including targeted uplifts and a strategic investment in the Blue Yonder Network, which is expected to further enhance carrier connectivity and position the company for continued success. Once carriers are onboarded, their connection profiles can be reused across multiple customers and business units, significantly reducing the onboarding effort and improving data consistency.

Linfox is currently deploying Blue Yonder Billing Management to improve the efficiency of customer invoicing, which has been traditionally labor-intensive and error-prone for the company. The solution will promote greater accuracy across Linfox’s extensive customer portfolio. It will enable Linfox to use execution data, including geo-fencing, timestamped events, and real-time updates, to help ensure charges reflect verified activity. These operational signals will also allow Linfox to calculate dwell time and will inform broader operational performance.

With unified execution, network, and billing data, Linfox will be able to provide customer-specific insights by lane, allocation, and freight profile, accurately locate freight in transit using GPS data, and share that visibility with customers through portals or direct integration.

Collectively, these commitments strengthen Linfox’s long-standing partnership with Blue Yonder and solidify the modern, scalable foundation that will help carry Linfox into its next chapter of operational and digital growth.
